Porto

Porto is a type of mutated wine originating in Portugal, produced exclusively in the Upper Douro region, located about 100 kilometres upstream from the city of Porto, between Peso da Régua and the Spanish border. The name "porto" is an onomastism, i.e. it is derived from the name of the city of Porto itself. It is important to note that the lower part of the river valley, near Porto, does not produce porto wine but rather vinho verde, due to the climatic conditions that do not allow the grapes to reach optimal ripeness in this region.

Grape growing is mainly done by small producers, each with their own plot of land called a "quinta".

Porto wine is usually aged for several years in oak casks and is meant to be drunk slowly. There are four main types of Port wine: Ruby, Tawny, Blanco and Vintage.
